Nisha Kothari Is Not The Basanti Of Sholay

The recent law-suit may have forced Ram Gopal Verma to make some changes in his ‘original’ Sholay plot but when it comes to Basanti even he can’t any compromises. The motormouth villege-belle will now be played by Nisha Kothari but sadly the character will no longer be called Basanti, she is now Ghungroo.

And replacing Basanti’s faithful horse Dhanno is a rickshaw that Ghungroo will drive called Laila.

Much like the original film, in Varma’s remake too, tomboy Ghungroo will share a unique friendship with her vehicle.

Sushmita Sen, who will be playing Jaya Bachchan’s role, will be called Devi and not Radha, as Jaya Bachchan was called. And she no longer wears white, but black. According to Ramu’s Sholay she’s no longer the Thakur’s silently grieving daughter-in-law but the Inspector Ranveer (Mohanlal)’s brother’s widow.

Ramu’s Devi, a trained nurse, is far more aggressive in her desire for revenge than Radha could ever have been. Her relationship with one of the two mercenaries also takes a course quite different from Sippy’s Sholay.

Moreover both the leading ladies Devi and Ghungroo, will be best friends.

However i still believe that Katrina Kaif shouldn’t have been out of this role. Katrina was definitely a better choice. But expect anything and everything from Ramu Gopal Verma. You can’t challenge him unfortunately. Good Luck Ramu Boss with your New Sholya.
